The Jays host Bradley Wednesday evening at the Qwest Center.  Bradley has had quite the ups and downs since the Jays played them a month ago:

  • Since the Jays defeated Bradley to knock them off the unbeaten conference ranks (4-0), Bradley has gone 3-6 since including losing their last 3.
  • Theron Wilson continues to lead the Braves in scoring at 13 points a game including 157 free throws attempts making 70% of them.
  • The Braves are 7-2 this year when scoring at least 66 points and have won 11 of their last 14 overall when hitting for at least 66.  Creighton is 6-5 when opponents score over 66 points.
  • Bradley owns a one game lead in the series 39-38.
  • Bradley has a 10 game losing streak in Omaha.

Those that were at the game last season at the Qwest are well aware of the Senior Night 111-110 Double OT thriller where Cavel Witter went off for 42 points.  I remember that game only because I watched it on the webcast that night because of some things we had scheduled to do that day and we got home before the game started and I had already given away my tickets.  I only wish I was there for that one as it appeared to be one of the more exciting games at the Qwest.

Anyway, the Jays are trying to keep Bradley down as they go down the stretch hoping for a 5th straight win.  The last meeting in Peoria the Jays were coming off of a couple of frustrating losses at Illinois St. and at home against UNI.  At that point, many fans were very frustrated with the Jays and there was a lot of questions to where this team is going.   9 games later, we have seen a transformation of this team with some defined roles.  Antoine Young started playing more in the last Bradley matchup and really sparked a team that was struggling and Creighton played one of their better games of the season and the team fought for each other.  Justin Carter has continued to show why fans and the coaching staff were so excited about him. Casey Harriman keeps battling.  Kenny Lawson and Kenton Walker are being a formidable combination in the post.  Josh Dotzler’s leadership has really come out the last few games and P’Allen Stinnett and Booker Woodfox are what teams focus on the most letting some other players step up.

The one guy sort of in the shadows throughout all of this is Cavel Witter.  I know he has had an ankle injury he has been getting through the past few games, but at the same time has really been quiet and minutes have been limited to about 13 minutes a game the last 4 games.  Though a lot of players from last year’s Bradley team are gone, I’m sure they remember what Cavel Witter did against them last year.  I think he will be pumped for this game again as well and I think we will see some good minutes from him Wednesday night.

At this point it is one game at a time and things will fall into place.  If the Jays just keep winning, they won’t have anything to worry about (state the obvious Captain Obvious)!  But seriously, maybe Polyfro was on to something.   With as crazy as the Valley has been this year, it would not surprise me that something crazy could happen.  I’m probably starting to drink too much Koolaid.

Anyway, I’m looking forward to this game and I think there will be a rousing welcome back for the Jays from the fans and some great student support.  They should be able to feed off the energy before sending them off to Carbondale for a little love on Valentine’s Day.  But first things first.

Prediction:  Jays 87, Bradley 72
