After Saturday’s total team effort at Bradley, the Jays get to go back home again to take on rival Southern Illinois.  Here is what to know about SIU:

  • SIU has reeled off 2 straight wins after starting an amazing 0-3.
  • Bryan Mullins has an over 3/1 ratio in assists to turnovers and likes to cause turnovers.  In my mind a hated man since his freshman year when he changed Josh Dotzler’s career
  • SIU is 2-3 in true road games this season.
  • With a noted recruiting class that came in, the team is lead in scoring by 2 newcomers–Kevin Dillard and Carlton Fay.  Though Fay was on the team last year he didn’t contribute much so you can consider him new.
  • With a couple of defections over the holiday break, the Saluki’s only have 9 players that have significant playing time.
  • Everyone’s favorite Playmate of the Year  Jenny McCarthy went to SIU to study nursing, but got out of town when Playboy called.

If you are a Creighton fan in any capacity, you know that this game is huge despite SIU’s record.   Though the dogs have struggled this season, they have loved playing in the Qwest Center winning every game against the Jays there until last season.  I won’t forget last season where the Jays left the Saluki’s in their cement boots as Creighton flew around the court and just dominated Southern Illinois. I’m hoping for a repeat this season.

The Jays themselves have a little unfinished business since the last time they played on the Qwest Center floor.  After a horrible showing against Northern Iowa and a team on the verge of a collapse, I think they have something they want to prove to the fans and what a better choice than Southern Illinois.

The game at Bradley was really about the best I have seen the Jays work together as a team and to get contributions from everyone who stepped on the court.  One cog missing however was Booker Woodfox.  He has had an ankle injury since the New Year’s Eve game at Indiana St. and re-injured it against Northern Iowa.  He did not play the Bradley game.  However, I think if he even has one good foot, I think we will see Booker in this game.

Bryan Mullins has been a pain in the side of the Bluejay program since he has been at SIU.  I won’t be sad to see him go.   One key to this game is to shut him down so he is not a factor.  The newcomers will be introduced to this rivalry and the whiteout crowd will be a factor.

I hope to see another team effort, but would also like to see more Antoine Young and the return of Booker Woodfox.  P’Allen Stinnett always gets up for these type of games.  This will be a fun game and the Jays will be ready to play.   Expect a dunk in the first 5 minutes of the game by someone.

The spread for this game is 9 points, but the average score of the games played between these teams since 1980 is 72-71 in favor of the Jays.   I know this game is on a Wednesday night, but if there is not a packed Qwest Center, I will be really disappointed.  Rivalries are rivalries.  The students start classes again on Wednesday.  This crowd should be pumping energy into the place from start to end.  It is too bad the rest of Nebraska won’t get to see this game and are instead treated to Nebraska/Iowa St.

In the end, I can talk about stats and players until I am blue in the face, but I am just ready for this game to occur and you don’t want to read anymore of this stuff anyway.

Prediction:  Creighton 70, SIU 62
